The journey of 100 miles begins with a single step. Almost 2 years ago to the day I wrote a post about Laughter and Lemons and the blog post started with this sentence:
You never know just how much one simple decision will bless your life.Laughter & Lemons
Four months ago I took a huge chance. I am not a make up artist, I don’t like “sales” in the traditional sense, and I don’t know everything there is to know about reactions that chemicals have on our skin or in our bodies. I had only tried 4 products. But I dove head first into what has proven to be one of the best decisions I could have made. I could not have imagined the impact that simple yes would have on my life.
COUNTERTIME – New Product Launch
Beautycounter just announced their new anti-aging, acne fighting line called COUNTERTIME that is formulated without retinol! While this in itself is super exciting (like squeals of joy throughout our entire team)… the meaning is a lot deeper than just a product launch.
This has been years in the works – YEARS. And that is the point. The products that Beautycounter puts out in the market are tested and re-tested and tested in their packaging. A constant “do better” attitude that pervades the company from the top down.
We can all do better. We can, right? No, I didn’t know how bad retinol was for you (see graphic for how it compares to Beautycounter’s plant derived alternative), or the whole story on physical sunscreens sinking into your skin after only 1 day’s use. But through a single yes, I am learning, growing, changing.
The decision I made was motivated as a way to get safer products into our home and for the financial opportunity. I figured I would learn along the way. What I would learn though is way more than product knowledge… and how it has affected my life is way more than what I am putting on my face. This yes was a shift to the intentional.
What are we buying? What am I using? How can we do better?
Just because a product is on the shelf or even labeled “natural”, “organic” doesn’t mean it is safe to use. More frequently, articles are coming out pointing to this exact fact:
- CNN Sunscreen Article: Sunscreen Enters Blood Stream After a Day of USE
- Endocrine Disruptors in the Drinking Water
- Weedkiller found in your Breakfast Cereal
Where do you start?
So where do you start? It can be overwhelming… and yes, making the switch to safer living can be investment both with time and money. But there are ways to make it easier. Just another reason I love Beautycounter so much – its one less thing to question. Their research, transparency and advocacy makes its so much less work.
Ever since I received my first products – I purged the rest. I have not used my old make up and because of that my overly large, definitely old collection of eye shadow and lipsticks are gone. Do I miss them – NO. Sure, there was that one color I liked, but the payoff of knowing that what I am putting on my face is cleaner – made the switch that much easier.
Beautycounter doesn’t just stop at amazing fomulations – it leads in advocacy. It isn’t just about our brand – its about all brands. Should there be 1,600 chemicals in use that have not been tested for human health and safety? Should you be able to buy them unknowingly and use them on your family? I don’t think so and the more I learn, the more I want to share. We are working for change that can impact the entire industry and even beyond beauty products. The last regulation that monitors this industry was when FDR was president and Ginger Rogers graced the screen. You couldn’t even tell what color lipstick she was even wearing.
Know better, do better.
Formulation & advocacy are amazing and two parts of this amazing brand…. but the third and I think most powerful is the education component. They teach, train, inspire – they are excited about everything they learn and they allow that to be part of the culture. So that when a new product launch comes – we learn anew why they worked so hard to bring this to market. How they were even more intentional with packaging decisions to allow for better sustainability, recycling options and less pieces.
But the final and biggest piece of all is the community of women who I work with daily, who call me on, help me face my fears and reach new heights I didn’t think possible. I could not have imagined that in one yes, there was so much potential.
Can I help you? Can I suggest a product or two to change? Can I offer you a spot alongside me in learning and growing? Are you ready to start a journey of 100 miles, with just one step?
